Not if they actually are, and you do it in a way that’s flatly descriptive rather than condescending. I am autistic, and if you were to call me autistic I would say “well … yeah.” 😛 If you called someone who was merely doesn’t get along with people autistic in a caustic way (which I’ve sometimes heard), that’s pretty offensive. It implies that an unpleasant person should be lumped in with people who have a reasonably well understood developmental condition, most of whom are trying their best to fit in with a world they genuinely don’t understand.

You might be autistic. People with autism often don’t understand the Kevin Fagaragan Cash Banooca New shirt it is in the first place but reasons for other people’s actions and words. For instance, if you are autistic, you might not be able to detect the difference between a helpful person (who tells you that you are autistic to explain things that are confusing or to identify ways to have less trouble with people) and a nasty person who uses “autistic” as an insult. If you are autistic, people who are not autistic can cause problems for you, but some people who are not autistic will be able to help you. “Neutotypical” is a word for people who aren’t autistic. The neurotypical person has a way of thinking about other people’s ideas and thoughts called “theory of mind.” When a neurotypical person interacts with another person (or even with animals and computers) a part of their brain takes the role of that other person and imagines the interaction from the other person’s point of view. That can include imagining what the other person can see from where they are standing, or whether the other person would feel cold or hot depending on what they are wearing. It can be more complicated, such as imagining how the other person would feel if the first person said something insulting or something complimentary. The problem with theory of mind is that the neurotypical person is imagining the other person’s experience based on their own preferences. Maybe the other person likes to be cold and hates compliments.
